Xiaomi has launched two new smartphones in the Xiaomi Mi A2 (above) and the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite at an event in Spain today. What’s the difference, and which one suits you best? Let’s take a look.
The Mi A2 is almost completely the same phone the earlier released Xiaomi Mi 6X, but comes with a much wider availability, while the Mi A2 Lite is a new variant that we haven’t seen before. Both phones come with Android One rather than Xiaomi’s usual MIUI skin. The Mi A2 is a step-up in both specs and size from the Mi A1, but it’s lacking a headphone jack, unlike the Mi A2 Lite. Both have rear fingerprint sensors.
The Mi A2 has Android One but no headphone jack
The full table of specs is below, and here’s a quick take on what will matter. The Mi A2 has a 6-inch Full HD+ LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 660 chipset under the hood, and with two RAM configurations: 4GB of RAM with 32 or 64GB of storage; and 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. It also comes with a 12+20MP dual rear shooters with f/1.75 aperture and a 20MP front shooter, and 3,000mAh battery.
As a comparison, the Mi A1 has a smaller 5.5-inch Full HD display, Snapdragon 625 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 32 or 64GB of storage, and had a snug little headphone jack.
The Mi A2 Lite represents something new from Xiaomi from the Mi A1 which didn’t offer a more budget version. It’s a 5.84-inch Full HD+ LCD panel with a 19:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 625 chipset and lower RAM, with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, or 4GB of RAM with 64GB storage. It’s sporting a much bigger 4,000mAh battery, and scrimps and saves everywhere, with micro-USB charging, and some much lower camera specs: 12+5MP, and a 5MP front shooter. It also has a display notch, whereas the Mi A2 does not (we should have pictures of it soon).
The Xiaomi’s Mi A2 looks like it’ll be in competition a range of value smartphones depending on what region you’re in. Certainly, it will offer competition with Xiaomi’s own Redmi Note 5 Pro, along with the Samsung Galaxy J8, the Vivo V9, the Oppo F7, and Nokia 6 and Nokia 6.1, also on Android One.

The Android One experience should be attractive to consumers, who get a bloatware-free experience along with faster updates.
