Wireless charging is one of the more futuristic things our phones can do. Drop your phone on a pad and watch everything light up. It’s just cool. It can take longer and make using the phone more difficult when it’s charging, but it’s still really neat. Adoption has been slow for a number of reasons, but phones with wireless charging capabilities are finally becoming something people want.

Not many OEMs have adopted the technology, but we have put together a list of all the latest phones with wireless charging capabilities built in. Most of the time, the phones accept either PMA or Qi charging, though Qi is the more popular choice. Let’s see which phones made the cut.

Samsung Galaxy S9/Note 9

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Easily the most popular phones with wireless charging are the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the S9 Plus and most recently the Galaxy Note 9. Most Samsung flagships for the last few years have supported Qi, and then Qi/PMA wireless charging — all the way back to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5. Samsung has made some of the best smartphones around since then, and their wireless charging feature made them that much cooler. Samsung’s adoption of wireless charging brought the concept back into the conversation when it could have easily been left behind.

Sony Xperia XZ2/Xz2 Premium/Xz3

The Sony Xperia XZ2 was announced at MWC 2018. Sony announced two phones at MWC, but only the XZ2 comes with wireless charging. Sony adopted a more rounded design for its smartphones this year, but this phone is still a bit on the chunky side, and it doesn’t have a headphone jack. Everything else about it is flagship level, from the 5.7-inch screen to the Snapdragon 845 processor to the 4GB of RAM and even IP 65/68 water and dust resistance.

The phone also uses an algorithm to upscale video content to HDR quality, resulting in phenomenal video playback. Overall, this is a solid option, and it charges your phone wirelessly, so it’s a win across the board.

A few months later, Sony launched the Xperia XZ3 Premium, with a larger 5.8-inch display, a dual camera setup, and a bigger 3,540mAh battery that, yes, also supports wireless charging. More recently, Sony revealed the Xperia XZ3, which also supports wireless charging. It has a 6.0-inch OLED display and Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. However, this phone only has a single rear camera. It’s now available for $899.99, and at the moment you can get the phone on Amazon and snap up an Xperia Ear Duo wireless headset, which is normally worth nearly $280, for free.

Nokia 8 Sirocco

Nokia 8 Sirocco

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is one of Nokia’s latest phones in 2018. One might argue it’s Nokia’s true flagship, but it’s something of a compromise. It’s not quite a flagship, and not really a midrange phone. On the one hand, The phone has last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor. On the other hand, the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space are definitely on par with today’s phones.

Probably the real star of the show is the Zeiss optics in the cameras. Nokia has a long history of solid creation tools and HMD Global is continuing that tradition. The camera is capable of up to 2x optical zoom and includes Nokia’s dual-sight technology which allows a user to use both front and rear-facing cameras at the same time.

Apple iPhone 8/8 Plus/iPhone X/XR/XS/XS Max

Yes, it’s Apple on an Android site. Still, there’s no denying that these are going to be some of the most popular phones with wireless charging so it’s worth at least giving them a mention.

Apple finally joined the wireless charging phones trend in 2017 with the launch of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the nearly bezel-free iPhone X. All three phones support the Qi standard, which means any wireless charging pad using the technology can charge up the newest iPhones. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus sport 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays respectively. The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED Super Retina display. All three phones include Apple’s newest in-house processor, the A11 Bionic, which features a 64-bit six-core CPU.

In 2018, Apple announced three more phones, the iPhone XR, the iPhone XS, and the iPhone XS Max. As with the 2017 models, all of these phones support wireless charging. The iPhone XR is the “mainstream” phone, with a 6.1-inch LCD display, and a single rear camera, for a starting price of $749. The iPhone XS and XS Max have 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch  OLED displays and dual rear cameras and prices that start at $999.

Apple also revealed plans in 2017 to release the AirPower wireless charging pad. It was supposed to be large enough so to fit an iPhone, and Apple Watch, and a set of AirPods all at once, and charge them all at the same time. Unfortunately, its been over a year since that announcement, and Apple has yet to offer an update on its release. Indeed, the company would not comment at all on its status at this year’s iPhone press event, and there are unconfirmed rumors Apple’s engineering team simply could not make the AirPower charging pad work as advertised. It’s looking like this product has either been canceled or at least delayed indefinitely.
