Xiaomi Halts Android 8.1 Update For Mi A1 Following ‘SMS Wipe’ Bug

Mi A1 was supposed to get updates from Xiaomi as quickly as other Android One phones, but it’s been a bitter disappointment for users as the much-awaited Android 8.1 Oreo update has once again been delayed.

A number of Mi A1 users are reporting that Xiaomi has halted the rollout of Android 8.1 Oreo for the device following reports of a critical bug that can reportedly wipe the phone’s SMS history. The company had started rolling out the update last week after releasing the Android 8.0 update earlier this year. The device was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat last September.

The Android 8.1 update, which reportedly weighed in at 1.15GB and included the June security patch, was said to have a known bug that was wiping off users’ SMS history. According to XDA, the problem apparently happens when the Messages app is swiped away from the ‘Recents’ tab for the first time after the update.

Alongside India, the update was apparently also being rolled out in Philippines, and users from both countries seems to have reported the issue on Twitter, MIUI forums and Reddit.

There seems to be no fix for it just yet, which has forced Xiaomi to pull the update. As a workaround, however, users can uses backup software to make sure that they don’t have to lose their messages, although, users will be hoping for a proper fix with the next update.

Early reports also seemed to have suggested that the build also broke SafetyNet and Play Store Certification on some devices, although, those issues now seems to have been fixed. Either way, now that the update has been pulled, it will be interesting to see when Xiaomi will be able to fix the bug and start rolling out the new software once again.

It is worth noting here that this is not the first time that Xiaomi is halting the Android 8.1 update for one of its devices following reports of a critical bug. The company back in May had to pull the Android 8.1 update for the Redmi Note 5 Pro following reports of bugs that led to some camera performance and battery-drain issues.
