Sega has launched a new entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series on Android (and iOS) phones and tablets. After a successful launch in Japan, Shin Megami Tensei Liberation Dx2 is now available on the Google Play Store for would-be demon hunters worldwide.
For those new to the long-running Mega Tensei franchise (that also includes the popular Persona and Devil Summoner spin-off series), SMT drops players into a post-apocalyptic world overrun with demons that can be negotiated with and recruited for use as a summon in RPG battles.
Liberation Dx2 features the regular roster of SMT demons — including the series’ mascot and app icon cover star Jack Frost — as well as 3D dungeon crawling gameplay, set in the “Aura Gate”, and turn-based encounters.
There’s also a Pokémon Go-like augmented reality mode and a fusion system to create stronger demons by splicing your companions together.
The game includes a PvP mode for “Dx2 Duels” where you can test your mettle against players from around the world and a story mode where your custom avatar character joins a secret group called the Liberators in the fight against the evil Acolytes.
The latest SMT game to hit mobile is a free-to-play title with in-app purchases. Basically, if you’re not a fan of gacha-style games then you might want to steer clear, but the early reviews on the Play Store are fairly positive with some mentioning that the monetization isn’t anywhere near as aggressive as some other titles of the same ilk.
As a fan of the Persona series in particular, I’m pretty excited about seeing how Liberation Dx2 translates all of the weird and wonderful SMT demon designs. I’m also intrigued to see how the game will fare after a wider release considering how niche the series is in the West compared to its home region of Japan.
