Update, July 23, 2018 (04:05AM EST): HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas has teased that the company will release the Nokia X5 outside of China (as spotted by Nokia Power User).

Replying to a tweet that suggested the company should bring the Nokia X5 to Sri Lanka and India, Sarvikas hinted that the phone would indeed be coming to other regions. You can see the Twitter exchange below:

In case you’re a little confused what HMD’s CPO is on about, you might remember a few months back when Sarvikas held a Twitter poll to see if there was any interest in a global release for the China-exclusive Nokia X6 (spoiler: there was).

With the Nokia X6 now launching in Hong Kong as the Nokia 6.1 Plus, Sarvikas’ latest reply indicates that the Nokia X5 will also release outside of China, likely under the Nokia 5.1 Plus moniker  it’s just a question of where and when.

Original article, July 18, 2018: HMD Global has just announced the Nokia X5, expected to be called the Nokia 5.1 Plus in international markets, in China. The latest notch-touting, Nokia-branded smartphone is a more modest version of the Nokia X6 announced in May, and it starts at 999 yuan (~$149).

As far as the Nokia X5 specs are concerned, the rumors had it mostly right: the handset features a 5.86-inch, 19:9, HD+ display, MediaTek Helio P60 12nm chip, and 3GB or 4GB of RAM with 32GB or 64GB of expandable storage. There’s a 13MP + 5MP dual camera system on the back, 8MP selfie camera, a USB Type-C port, headphone jack, and a 3,060mAh battery.

Editor's Pick

The Nokia X5 is housed in a double-sided glass with a polycarbonate frame, and will come in blue, white, and black.

The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo and is part of Google’s Android One program, meaning it should be due two years of major updates and three years of security updates.

In addition to the 999 yuan model with 3GB RAM / 32 GB ROM, there’s also a 4GB RAM / 64GB ROM model for 1399 yuan (~$209). We still don’t know where else the X5 will go on sale, or when, but it will be available in China from tomorrow (July 19). We’ll hopefully have more details soon.
