HTC is apparently readying a new mid-range smartphone codenamed “Imagine Life,” based on marketing materials seen by Android Authority. Though we didn’t see the handset’s official name, its codename and specs lead us to believe it could be the HTC U12 Life. We won’t know for sure until it breaks cover, but in the meantime, here are some hints as to what it might include.
The unannounced HTC phone will have a 6-inch, FHD+ (2160 x 1080) resolution display, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB internal storage (plus microSD support). No other storage variations were mentioned in the materials, though they can’t be ruled out at this stage.
It will have a dual rear camera setup with 16MP + 5MP sensors, phase detection autofocus, and 4K video, and a 13MP front-facing camera with flash and beauty mode. It’s going to be powered by a 3,600mAh battery and there’s set to be a fingerprint scanner… somewhere.
The phone will have Dual SIM, Bluetooth 5.0, and NFC support, but we don’t yet know which version of Android it’s going to run. The HTC U11 Life launched last December with Android Oreo, but as we’re seeing these promo materials now, it could mean that the U12 Life would be launched a little earlier, and potentially with the final version of Android P (which will probably arrive next month).
If this is the U12 Life, seems like the phone would be a significant upgrade on its predecessor in some departments — last year’s phone had a 5.2-inch display, single rear camera, and 2,600mAh battery. Other upgrades, like the chipset (Snapdragon 636 versus a Snapdragon 630) are more modest.
The phone’s specs put it in the territory of the Nokia X6 (a.k.a. the Nokia 6.1 Plus) (~$250) and Redmi Note 5 Pro (~$220), but we can’t see HTC setting the price as low for the U12 Life. The U11 Life started at $349 for its 32GB model, so, if the information we have is accurate, the U12 life should cost at least that.
